I think it has been a while Ross since you had a chat about conditioning. I have had great seasons where I worked out hard before the year started and felt the pay-off from the first opening practice session. Then there were the years where work and stress and a lack of time had me starting a season in what I felt was very substandard shape. Boy what a difference when you are struggling in the car and getting tired after just one session on track. Being sweaty and winded when getting out of the car is never good, but you know when it happens you are way behind the 8 ball for that year. A bit off from your subject, but itis amazing how high your heart rate goes on track when you are out of shape.

I recently drove in a three day race event driving a Miata. The week before I had a stomach bug. I could only eat rice and chicken, crackers during the event. I lost four pounds. Needless to say, I was not performing at all. I had no energy and purpose. Willpower got me trough it. It showed me that you have to be in physical shape and healthy to perform your best!
