Thanks for your involvement RB and for sharing the facts of the new Cat2! I told myself I was going to forgo any data system to “slow it down and stay safer” (sold my ApexPro in Dec) but this looks interesting. I have instructed many students who had the Cat1 installed and I was always impressed. It’s a great “coaching” tool, at a fair price. I especially like the smaller size. Cheers, Rob in Louisville KY.

Hi Ross, thank you for the article! Happy Catalyst 1 user here. Is the underlying software and coaching algorithms the same in 1 and 2? Or is it just the hardware factors (smaller, higher rate on GPS, video and data in app)? Trying to decide whether to upgrade. Also, I loved this article because the key points you described were not apparent to me at all from Garmin’s web page. Better GPS and in-app video is actually a huge plus, and I don’t recall Garmin actually mentioning that on the product page, which is a miss on their part. Thanks!

Very cool. We are fortunate to have your involvement in the development. By drivers, for drivers.

Ross, how do you mount the new Catalyst in an open car with a minimal windscreen (I.e. sports racer)? Does Garmin have mounts? This was a problem for me with the original Catalyst which I have …

The Catalyst wasn’t specifically designed for open cockpit cars, but I know more than a few drivers who mounted the camera on the top of the roll hope on an open car, so that would work with the Catalyst 2, as well. I’ve not tried it, but I don’t see a problem doing that.
